Georgia DUI Fines

There’s no way around it; driving under the influence (DUI) offenses are expensive. If convicted of a Georgia DUI, you will be ordered to pay out of pocket for DUI School, alcohol treatment, court costs, and fines. For these reasons, hiring an experienced DUI lawyer is often a better financial decision than paying all the fees and fines associated with a Georgia DUI.
To determine the amount of fines you will be required to pay, the judge will consider any prior DUI offenses and use the court’s mandatory minimum sentencing guidelines. While the judge cannot go below the mandatory minimum, he or she can increase your fines based on the circumstances of your drunk-driving case.
The Georgia DUI fines for a first time offender start at $300, plus a statutory surcharge. For a second offense, the mandatory minimum fine is $600, and the minimum fine for a third offense is $1,000. In addition to these fines, you may be responsible for paying any necessary court costs.
You could incur further expenses if convicted of drunk driving. For example, you will be responsible for paying for alcohol treatment. To reinstate your license, you will have to pay not only the reinstatement fee but also the cost of a DUI Risk Reduction Program (otherwise known as “DUI School”). If ordered to install an ignition interlock device in your vehicle, you are responsible for the installation, rental, and maintenance.
You may also lose wages if you have to take time off work to serve time behind bars or perform your community service hours. And once insurers learn about your conviction, they can choose to substantially increase your insurance premiums.
A DUI can take a toll financially in other unexpected ways. Once you have a drunk-driving conviction on your record, you could be terminated from your current job or be ineligible for employment at places that require a clean background.
