Georgia DUI Walk-and-Turn Test

Georgia DUI Walk-and-Turn Test

During a Georgia driving under the influence (DUI) traffic stop, you may be asked to perform a series of field sobriety tests, including the walk-and-turn test. This test, used to determine if there is enough evidence to make a drunk-driving arrest, is designed to measure your physical and cognitive abilities. If you are facing criminal charges after taking the Georgia DUI walk-and-turn test, hiring an experienced defense lawyer may be your best option.

The walk-and-turn test is comprised of two stages: instruction and performance. During the instruction stage, the officer will ask you to maintain a certain stance while he or she explains how to perform the test. The officer will look for “clues” of intoxication during this stage, such as whether you are unable to maintain balance while he or she is providing instructions.

During the performance stage, you must take nine heel-to-toe steps down a straight line, pivot, and take nine more heel-to-toe steps back. You are also required to count aloud the number of each step you take. The officer will observe you during the performance stage to see if you take the wrong number of steps, step out of line, or fail to count aloud.  If you make two or more of these mistakes, you can be arrested for DUI. In addition, using your arms to balance or failing to complete the test will result in an automatic failure.

If you have failed the Georgia DUI walk-and-turn test, you should know that fighting your charges is possible. Attorney Cory Yager is a former law enforcement agent who has received extensive training on the field sobriety tests. He knows how the tests should be administered and can challenge the results of your walk-and-turn test if the officer did not follow the proper test guidelines. If the results of your test are disproved, your charges may be dismissed or you may win an acquittal.

Field sobriety tests are extremely subjective. If the officer already believes you are impaired by alcohol, this opinion may affect whether you pass or fail. Don’t plead guilty just because you failed the walk-and-turn test. Submit your case information online today, and Mr. Yager will provide you with a free DUI case evaluation.
